Title: Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

Rating: ★★★★★

Release: 6th November 2012

Synopsis: Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living – one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers’ arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.

Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon’s secret temple and dreamed of a world that was like a jewel-box without a jewel – a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness. This was not that world.

Review:

A thrilling sequel to a completely original and stand out trilogy!

I dived straight into this after finishing the first book, Daughter of Smoke and Bone and I definitely think takes the cake for being my favourite of the three books, because it was OUTSTANDING!

Once again Laini Taylor completely blew me away with her writing style. Her descriptions are so vivid it transports you straight into the book, and feels as if her writing is just projected right off the page. Not only did her writing style excel within this book, but her character development was brilliant.

I loved how we could see the wear and tear on Karou after the events of the previous book. It added so much realism to the story, which I always feel is important for novels, especially Young Adult Fantasy.

The relationship with Akiva was also portrayed with such tension, and emotion, I was thriving for their scenes together! There are a few parts I can’t mention that I loved without spoiling, but let me tell you Laini is so deceptive with the story I couldn’t read the book quick enough.

The plot is so well thought out and clear that you can tell Laini knew exactly where she was going with the story and I loved the change of direction from the first book.

Emotional, thrilling and just outright brilliant, this is the sequel that the world needed. If you think Daughter of Smoke and Bone was good – just you wait!

History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera // Review

Title: History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

Rating: ★★★★

Release: 17th January 2017

Silvera is back breaking hearts, and emotions with his new bestseller, History Is All You Left Me. A beautifully diverse story with a life changing story, this book is sure to be a tearjerker no matter your age.

HIAYLM follows the story of Griffin, a young teenage boy who recently lost Theo, the love of his life. Not only does he have to deal with the grief, but he also has to cope with sharing his grief with Jackson, Theo’s boyfriend at the time of his death. Together they have to cope with reminiscing about Theo, dealing with each other, and trying their best to stay afloat while the grief of losing the boy they both loved tries to drag them down.

The message behind this book is utterly perfect. As someone who has lost a family member, I’m no stranger to the feeling of grief, and for me the portrayal of grief in this story was brilliant. It felt so real, and I really felt like as Griffin’s feelings developed and his emotions became darker and harder to control, that I was along with him for the ride.

Starr Gone by Kim Briggs // Review

Title: Starr Gone by Kim Briggs

Rating: ★★★★★

Release: 2nd June 2017

This series just keeps getting better and better as shown by the explosive and action packed third book in the Starr Fall series.

First off I would just like to once again mention that I absolutely love this series, and I would even go as far as to say this was definitely my favourite book of the series so far. The book continues almost exactly where Starr Lost finished off, and that’s just what I wanted! Starr Lost ended on such a cliffhanger and the outcome of the cliffhanger was handled perfectly.

The character development was AMAZING in this book. How Starr develops compared to the first book is something I’ve been waiting for the entire series, and I couldn’t be happier with the badass Starr we have throughout this book. I loved how we got to see Starr separated from the main ‘team’ and got to see how she copes with things on her own, and just how quick thinking and quick witted she is as a person. I love her and Christian’s relationship in Starr Lost, but seeing how she takes things in her stride without him, is absolutely brilliant. Kim you’ve outdone yourself with Starr here, one of my favourite female characters in the world.

Not only is Starr’s character development but Di has such a change in herself and learns so well how to not only be a part of team, but to lead it in Starr’s absence and I love her. I love how strong she is, but that she also shows weakness in this book, such as her explaining why she never felt she belonged. The underlying message within this book that family doesn’t have to mean blood, and sometimes your closest family are those that you least expected is one of my favourite things about the entire series. The closeness of the team as a whole is better than ever in this book, and I love it.

The plot in this book was such a shock from the last two, the twists and turns that carry out throughout it are made me constantly on edge to know what happens next, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I love the introduction of the new enemy the team have to face (no spoilers!), it adds such a fresh narrative to the story and keeps you on your toes, even three books in.

The ending was once again incredible. I was not even slightly expecting the book to end there, so when I pressed to turn to the next page and it came up with Acknowledgements I was frantically scrolling praying that there would be more! As shocking as it was, it was such a perfect ending, not the biggest cliffhanger but still making it so I need the next book now!

This series just keeps getting better and better, and with perfect character development, twisting narrative to keep you on your toes, and wonderful writing to keep you wanting more, it looks like the reign of Kim Briggs is definitely set for this year. I can’t wait to see what the next book has in store for Starr and the team!

Thank you again to Kim for sending me Starr Gone! You’re an angel! It’s out on Amazon on the 2nd June 2017 so make sure to check it out and pre-order now!

Starr Lost by Kim Briggs // Review

Title:
 Starr Lost
by Kim Briggs

Rating: ★★★★★

Release Date: 5th January 2017

After the stunning debut novel of the series was released earlier this year, it seems 2017 is the year for Kim Briggs rise to the top spot with this wonderful and exciting YA sequel.

Starr Lost continues where the first book in the series, Starr Fall left off. Starr is still on the run with Christian, and the Organisation are on her tracks, determined to bring back their lost recruit to the programme. However Starr refuses to go back, and will do anything in her power to keep herself and those dear to her, safe from harm.

First off, sequels can be sometimes disappointing to read, especially when they carry on from a particularly high action novel prior, which Starr Fall definitely was. However this book definitely does not disappoint at all. It picks up right where we left it and that was one of my favourite things about it! You weren’t questioning what happened between the two books, and you could easily just flow back into the series, even after being away from it for a while.

Starr Lost also gives us a new POV within the book, and switches between Starr’s perspective and that of her and Christian’s friend, Di’s perspective. I loved this because it was so refreshing seeing all of the events from another viewpoint, and the differences between how Di and Starr view things and react to things was just perfect. It really added a depth to the book that we didn’t see in Starr Fall and it was brilliant.

The characters in general were written and developed beautifully. The addition of Frank and Di into the mix really completed the dynamic of the group, and it had the best effect. One of my favourite things is that is can be so easy in YA books to concentrate on the romantic relationship aspect completely and ignore every other character, but Kim writes this book so well that it’s balanced out perfectly. Not only do you have the relationship between Starr and Christian, but you also have the tone of the importance of family and how family doesn’t need to be blood relatives, sometimes the most important people to you that feel like family are those who are there for you when you need them the most. I loved this in the book, as it really created such an emotion, and love for each character not only together but individually too. It was beautifully written.

It was great how we find out so much more about the Organisation in this book, and it was so good how it answered all of the questions that were left after finishing Starr Fall, but it also created so many more to constantly leave you guessing!

The book was so well paced, and constantly had me on the edge of my seat! I stayed up well into the early hours of the morning to finish it because I just couldn’t put it down. I was hooked! The ending was so well thought out that I am now BEGGING for the next book in the series! I can’t wait to carry on with the story.

I am honestly so in love with this series, the characters and the direction that the narrative seems to be taking. If you thought Starr Fall was good – you aren’t ready for this one!

If you want to read my review of Starr Fall you can find it here!

Starr Fall is available to download now on all ebook platforms. Starr Lost is now available to preorder on ebook, and will be released on January 5th 2017

Starr Fall by Kim Briggs // Review

Title:
 Starr Fall
by Kim Briggs

Rating: ★★★★★

Release Date: 4th November 2016

Kim Brigg’s debut novel truly is a wonderful start to the series.

Starr Fall is the first book in a new Young Adult/Fantasy series by Kim Briggs. It tells the story of Starr, a model student with a typical teenagers’ life, until the Organisation decide they want her to be an assassin. In a fight for her freedom she goes on the run from the Organisation, and the last thing she expects was to fall in love with the mysterious Christian on the way.

From the start of the book I got the impression that this would be a romance “chick lit” genre of book, since it sets the scene of boy talk and sleepovers. I didn’t expect that within 30 pages, the seemingly happy chick lit vibe would be drastically turned into a completely action packed novel, that left me on the edge of my seat.

I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like this book, the plot behind it is wonderfully unique, it’s a breath of fresh air that’s needed in the YA genre. The characters are so relatable and fun, that you can’t help but get attached to them and become completely immersed in their story.

Starr was such a stand out female protagonist, she has such a wonderful sense of humour and even when everything goes downhill for her I still felt I could relate to her, and was extremely invested in everything that happened to her.

The development of Christian is also one of the best parts of this book, Kim creates his character so beautifully that you can’t help but fall in love with him. Without spoiling anything, I’ll just say that the change of his character from the start of the book to the end is wonderful to see and progress with in the novel.

There is a case of “instant love” in the book, which can sometimes be a little unbelievable and boring in YA. However in Starr Fall it is completely the opposite, it works so well within the novel and is entirely believable. They go through so much I think it would be hard not to fall in love! I loved this because it really adds a twist to the already popular genre which is just what everyone has been waiting for.

Starr Fall leaves you with so many questions that it’s a wonder anyone will be able to wait until January for the second book. There are so many intricate aspects in the novel, that questions flood your mind. Who are the Organisation? Does Christian have anything to do with them? What about Starr’s grandparents? The questions stay with you long after finishing, and keep you involved even after you’re done with the book!

Kim Brigg’s debut novel truly is a wonderful debut. From start to finish I was hooked, and all I could think about was what would possibly happen next. From believable characters to a brilliant new aspect of YA narrative, if you love action packed thrillers then this is the book for you! Now to begin the wait until book 2 is out!

Top 10 Bookish Merch Stores

Hi everyone!

Okay so buying bookish merchandise is one of my favourite things to do (other than buying books haha!) and over the past year I’ve found some amazing stores to buy things from so thought I’d share them with you! This post will probably be longer than usual (I can’t express my love for these stores enough!) so bear with me! Anyway, in no order, here are my top 10 favourite bookish merch stores!

1.TheMeltingLibrary

The candles from Raquel are literal bookish perfection! She takes so much time in perfecting everyone’s scents, and makes the most beautiful candles! It’s my absolute dream to one day own at least one of the candles (THERE IS A JEM CANDLE GUYS), but the shipping kills me because it’s so much to where I live (don’t live in the UK guys, it ruins your life). However I still definitely recommend getting one of her candles, because she seems so lovely and her scents are PERFECT! Reading the descriptions it’s like she knows the characters personally, and knows exactly what they smell like! Definitely goals in bookish merchandise right here! Just a few of my favourite looking candles below! How wonderful:

Jem - Parabatai/Shadowhunters Inspired CandleFireheart - By the Wyrd Collection - Throne of Glass Inspired CandlesFounding Father - Hamilton Inspired Candle

2.BehindThePages

Okay so EVERYTHING in this store on Etsy is amazing! Gina makes beautiful watercolour bookmarks, book boyfriend (and now girlfriend) soaps, and she’s also recently introduced lip balms!! I have such a love for lipbalms and bookmarks so this store is a must have for me. I’ve yet to order a lip balm (I’m making an order soon don’t worry, Manon and Jem you’re coming my way) but everything just seems amazing! Anything she creates is gold, and so unique too! I love the idea of book boyfriend/girlfriend items! Bringing the fictional into the real world, what more does a book lover need! Here’s some examples of the wonderful items!

Nevernight Thin Watercolour BookmarksManon Lip Balm (Throne of Glass Series)Jem Lip Balm (The Infernal Devices series)

3.BookBeau

I LOVE BENITA AND HER BOOKBEAUS. There I said it. I ordered my first bookbeau a couple of months ago and I haven’t stopped using it since! If you don’t know what one is, it’s a padded sleeve to put your paperback in so it doesn’t get damaged when you carry it around, and it is AMAZING. Her designs are beautiful, so well made, and she is just an angel. Definitely go check out her store, but they sell out fast (when they’re in stock) so make sure to get in there quick when she restocks! She’s currently out of stock so here’s a picture of my bookbeau!

4.HappyHelloCo

I have a serious addiction to magnetic bookmarks at the moment, and it all began because of HappyHello! Vivi makes the most wonderful little book companions, from Throne of Glass characters to Harry Potter. I love the designs and how you can easily see which characters they are, and I own SO MANY of her collections it’s becoming an obsession. If you have a love for bookmarks, and can’t think of anything better than to share your reading adventure with your favourite characters, I definitely recommend this store! Here are the bookmarks I own and some other ones of Vivi’s!
