One Quiet Woman by Anna Jacobs // Blog Tour Review

Title: One Quiet Woman by Anna Jacobs

Rating: ★★★★★

Release: 7th September 2017

Synopsis: 1930, Lancashire:
Leah Turner’s father has been killed in an accident at the laundry, and since her mother died years ago it falls to her to become sole provider for her little sister. But women’s wages are half those of men and pawning the few belongings she has left will only keep their vicious rent collector at bay for a few weeks, so even if she finds a job, they’ll lose their home.

Out of the blue Charlie Willcox, the local pawnbroker, offers her a deal. His brother Jonah, an invalid since being gassed in the Great War, needs a wife. Charlie thinks Leah would be perfect for the job.
The idea of a marriage of convenience doesn’t please Leah, but she finds Jonah agreeable enough and moving with him to the pretty hamlet of Ellindale may be the only chance of a better life for her sister.

But other people have plans for the remote Pennine valley, and the two sisters find themselves facing danger in their new life with Jonah. Can the three of them ever look to a brighter future?

Review:

This book was one of the most lovely and heart warming books I have ever read! I didn’t know whether it would really be my kind of book when I first read the synopsis, but from the end of the first chapter I was completely in love.

I adored the story so much, Leah’s rise from rags to riches was so heart warming and I loved seeing how even in the hardest times she still continued as if everything was normal. Leah is one of the most inspirational characters I’ve ever read about. I loved her development, and how throughout everything that happens she still stays so humble and down to earth.

Her relationship with Jonah completely melted my heart. It was the perfect amount for the book, and was so refreshing that the romance didn’t overpower the book completely. The sense of family and having a close knit community was something that really stood out to me, and I liked how that was included and intertwined in the story so well.

The overall writing style of the book was perfect, and included such a range of narratives that there was something for everyone! The addition of the drama and mystery surrounding the Huttons was such a wonderful part, and really added another element to the story to keep you immersed. The pacing was brilliant, and really felt as if you were going along with the story with Leah herself.

There wasn’t one thing I didn’t love about this book, and if I could give it more than 5 stars I would! If you’re looking for a wonderfully written historical fiction book that will leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling, and also a desperate need to read the next book, then look no further!

Review:

An action packed novel with everything a historical fiction book needs, from badass female protagonists to Roman soldiers! You’ll be thinking of this long after the final page.

I’d heard amazing things about this book before I picked it up, so I was already really excited to read it. However once I actually got around to it, I completely fell in love with it!

The story kicks in straight away, which I loved. It can be hard when you read a book with a slow start, but this was everything I wanted. I was hooked from the first page, and the story just kept getting better and better. The narrative in itself was brilliantly created, with such historical meaning behind it. I loved how we could see a clear divide between the Romans and the British, it made it feel so real.

Fallon slowly became one of the best female protagonists I’ve ever read about. I loved how she never gave up, and that her honour was the most important part of her life. She was so inspiring, and the journey of her having to learn to be a warrior was written beautifully. I felt like I was on the journey with her, and I felt everything she did.

The characters all worked together so well and I love the comradeship between Fallon and her friends. However it was also brilliant how Fallon still kept her need to be a warrior above all, it showed just how much of a strong character she is.

This book has everything you could want in a historical fiction novel; Romans, historical accuracy, badass females! It is exciting and dramatic from start to finish, and you’ll want the next book as soon as you finish!

You can buy The Valiant at all major outlets now!

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman // Review

Title: Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman

Rating: ★★★★★

Release: 1st May 1990

A perfect balance between hilarity, brilliant story telling and an all round fun loving book about accidentally misplacing the Antichrist – what more could you want?

I had never read a Terry Pratchett book before but I already loved Neil Gaiman, so when my other half recommended this to me I was extremely excited. As soon as I finished it all I wanted to do was restart it and devour it all over again, I loved it.

Right from the first page I was hooked, this book has such a way of pulling you in without you even realising it’s a marvel. I loved how throughout the entire book it mixed hilarious moments that would leave you with tears in your eyes, but then would also include serious moments and remind you of the underlining plot of the Apocalypse within the novel. No book has ever created such a perfect balance within these two feelings before but this had everything I wanted.

I also really liked how at the start of the book, there is a character list, almost like a play, to help you get to know the unique names of each character so you know who they are as soon as you start reading. It was such a unique addition to the book that I couldn’t help but love it.

Each character had such a brilliant purpose and the friendship between the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale was one of my favourites. It was so interesting to see the two representations of Good vs Evil working so well together, the underlying message of them working as a team was a lovely addition. They were both so funny and also so hard working to please not only their master but also to help right the wrongs in the world, they were just developed with such wonderful skill.

It was also extremely nice to see the different POV’s in relation to the uprising of the Apocalypse such as the Four Horsemen, the Kraken and how Adam the Antichrist all prepare for the upcoming end of the world. It allowed us insight into every character mentioned with the book which is so rare, but the talent in the writing style allowed this to shine through.

I also loved how human the Antichrist, Adam, and his hellhound, Dog, is. They bring such a normality to such a crazy book with such death defying plot lines, and it was the most brilliant contrast. When everyone comes together at the end, I couldn’t help but be on the edge of my seat to see what happens, but also laugh at the sarcasm of both Crowley and Adam. It was a perfect ending for this wonderful book.

There is no doubt in the world that the late but great Terry Pratchett and the wonderful Neil Gaiman are some of the best writers to have ever blessed our world, but this book proves that not only are they brilliant together but when they come together they create an absolute masterpiece. With a story that is so unique that I know I’ll never read anything like it, and with the wonderful character creations within the story, this is a story that will forever be deserving the title of ‘one of the greatest books in existence’ and I hope everyone gets the chance to read it.

About Kim Briggs

(Blogger Note: She is an actual angel!)

Author Pic

Kim Briggs once smashed into a tree while skiing. The accident led to a concussion, a cracked sternum, temporary notoriety as a sixth grader returned from the dead, and the realization that fictionalized accounts are way more interesting than just slipping on the ice.
An unhealthy obsession with conspiracy theories combined with a love of travel and happily ever afters led Kim to write her YA novel, Starr Fall, where a secret organization decides 17-year-old Starr Bishop is not only the model student, but the ideal assassin. While in hiding, Starr meets dark, moody, and dead sexy Christian Evergood. Cue the swoon worthy music. But it’s not all happily ever afters for Kim. Her NA novel, And Then He, explores the dark and scary corners of the human psyche. Following a night of innocent flirting with a handsome stranger, Tiffani finds herself in the midst of a nightmare she can’t escape. And Then He is available through Amazon and other major book retailers. Starr Fall released November 2016 with Inkspell Publishing, followed by Starr Lost in January 2017 and Starr Gone in June 2017. Her novella, Avalanche is part of the Valentine Kisses Anthology and released February 14, 2017.
When she’s not doing something writerly, Kim can be found jumping into snowdrifts with her three kids, husband, and dog. She’s careful to avoid trees.
