Release: 28th February 2018
Synopsis: The masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer – the serial rapist turned murderer who terrorised California for over a decade – from the late Michelle McNamara. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark offers a unique snapshot of suburban West Coast America in the 1980s, and a chilling account of the wreckage left behind by a criminal mastermind. It is also a portrait of one woman’s obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth, three decades later, in spite of the personal cost.
The masterful record of one of the most talked about true crime cases in the world, this book is truly a wonderful piece of work.
I knew this book would be good, there was a reason it is one of the most talked about true crime books of the year, but when I was reading it, it blew me away. The sheer amount of detail that Michelle went into when researching the case, and the well investigated leaps she made into finding out what happened was brilliant. She wrote it in such simple terms that were easy to understand but still utlimately respectful of the victims of the Golden State Killer.
I loved how we saw the process as Michelle went through it, and we also saw how the dedication to the case affected her everyday life. I really enjoyed how we got to see not only the records she created to track the events of the EAR/ONS, but also the depth of detail about each victim and the way he managed to get away with it.
I think reading it now is also a different experience as it truly broke my heart when I realised that the Golden State Killer has finally been caught, yet even after so many years of trying to find the truth, Michelle never lived to see him brought to justice. The letter at the end broke my heart, but honestly I am just in awe at how strong of a woman she was.
This was truly the true crime book that is a must read. Michelle dedicated her life to this case, and did some of the most amazing and in depth work to find out the truth about the crimes. She may not be here now, but you did it Michelle. He’s been found, the case is over. You can truly rest in peace now.
