Release: 22nd November 2016
Synopsis: In a world where disease, war and crime have been eliminated, the only way to die is to be randomly killed (“gleaned”) by professional scythes. Citra and Rowan are teenagers who have been selected to be scythes’ apprentices, and despite wanting nothing to do with the vocation, they must learn the art of killing and understand the necessity of what they do. Only one of them will be chosen as a scythe’s apprentice and as Citra and Rowan come up against a terrifyingly corrupt Scythedom, it becomes clear that the winning apprentice’s first task will be to glean the loser.
What happens when the only way to keep yourself alive is to kill others?
Honestly what isn’t there to love in this book? The characters are perfect, the writing is phenomenal and the plot itself? Unbelievably genius. I truly completely adore this book. The writing is so captivating and so good that I just couldn’t put it down, and it explored the world so well.
I am so fascinated by the world of the Scythe’s and what would drive a world to ’employ’ people to ‘glean’ people for no reason other than they were picked at random. The world they live in is without disease, war and crime and everyone imagines that to be the dream so people only ever die from old age – but this book shows just what extents the human race will go to to keep it’s population down.
I loved the difference between each Scythe and how they not only took their names in such a unique way, but how each Scythe had a different way of gleaning their ‘victims’. It was such a small addition to the story but something that I really appreciated.
Citra and Rowan were such a great duo and the complete polar opposite to each other, but it worked so well. They were both so fierce and so determined at both being the best Scythe they could be, no matter what their opinions on the matter were.
This book was just so action packed, and brilliantly fast paced from the start up until the very dramatic, heart breaking and emotional end and honestly I could read a ton more books in this world.
This book is definitely one of the best ones I’ve ever read, and shout out to Neal Shusterman for being one of the most talented writers I’ve ever read. If you haven’t read this book, then please go and pick it up now!
