Release: 25th September 2012
Synopsis: I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently. I’d tell my sister no. I’d never beg my mother to talk to my dad. I’d zip my lips and swallow those hateful words. Or, barring all of that, I’d hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time. I’d tell them I love them. I wish…
A fantastical retelling of a much loved story, this book is all about Alice but with a little twist…zombies.
I nearly unhauled this book like 20 times, but I am so unbelievably glad I didn’t because I loved it! It focuses on the story of Alice, but definitely not as we know it. Instead of entering a mystical Wonderland in the original story, Alice can see zombies when others can’t. Her dad could, and they all thought he was crazy until one day, Alice realises she is destined to use her gift to protect the world.
This book was such a huge surprise for me, but from the first page I was hooked. The premise for the story was truly unique and I loved how it was so loosely based on Alice in Wonderland. There have been so many takes of this story throughout history, so I enjoyed the unique take this one did. However if you are looking for an exact retelling of the Alice in Wonderland story but with zombies, this might not be for you. The Alice relation is very loose so just be aware of that before picking it up.
However the characters were well intertwined within the book’s narrative, and the relationship between Cole and Alice was fascinating to read about. I loved the visions aspect to it, it added an air of mystery about why this was happening and included a bit of foreshadowing too that I love so much. Also the way that the other “slayers” interact with Alice and have to come to terms with accepting her is just brilliant, it’s a great cast of people.
The pacing of the book is perfect, although due to the nature of the story things happened quickly, it was never too fast and I felt everything was written so well that I couldn’t help but avoid putting it down!
Zombies are again, a very well used subject in books, but the zombies within this story felt so real and something that could easily happen. I enjoyed how only certain people could see them, and the dangers that occurred because of that, it was a nice breath of fresh air for the zombie genre.
I could not put this book down, and I am so happy I didn’t unhaul it. It was thrilling and action packed right from the start, and the romance was written so well that it left my heart warm, but didn’t overtake the main storyline.
I truly cannot recommend it enough, and the next books in the series are just amazing. Keep an eye of for a review of them in the next week!
If you love mystery, zombies and very loosely based retellings then this is the book for you!
