As the founder captivates his young family, Martin sets out to discover the truth of the island, however terrible it might be, where something so perfect hides unimaginable darkness beneath…
A creepy and eerie novel with brilliant storytelling, and a premise that proves that heaven can sometimes be hell.
First off can we please just talk about that cover? I can’t explain enough how much that fits the overall story, and it just completely sets the tone for the story perfectly. The back of the book features a quote from author Sarah Pinborough which says “Youers is a Koontz oe King for a new generation.” When I first read this I thought this was a huge claim, and as King is one of my favourite authors, I never thought it would live up to that expectation. Boy, was I wrong.
This truly is the new generation of horror, and Youers is most definitely an author we all need to keep an eye out for. I could not put this book down at all, and when I did it was all I could think about. The overall story is so fascinating, and can really be brought into reality, making it that much more terrifying.
Valerie is truly one of the most diabolical villains I have ever read about. Her character and motives are so scary, and the fact we get chapters from her perspective is brilliant. It adds such a new level of horror, to start to understand her motives.
Edith is such a wonderful character, and her premonitions were completely captivating. I loved how they were intertwined with the story, and how she played such a huge part of the overall plot. It was so very cleverly done.
This book is just so wonderfully done. I didn’t think I would fall into this book as much as I did, but I couldn’t wait to uncover the secrets of Halcyon. This is how you do a book with a cult-like feel. There were so many twists, turns and depth to the story and characters, I was truly blown away.
Rio Youers is the author of a new generation of horror. If you think you’ve seen everything in this genre, then think again.
