Horror Books Based on True Stories!

Hi everyone!

I love true crime so much and it makes everything so much creepier when I know that the story is based on true events! I thought I’d gather some of my favourite true stories together so I can share it for my other true crime fans!

The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson

Everyone has probably heard of The Amityville Horror – whether it’s the original film, the remake or just the mystery surrounding it – but here it is in all it’s glory! The accounts of the original Amityville haunting – be sure not to read it alone at night!

Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry

The Manson Murders shocked the nation when they came to light, and Helter Skelter has become well known for it’s in depth investigation into the Manson family, and the brutal murders they carried out. It’s well known in the book community, and it makes it that next level of terrifying to know it actually happened.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum

Based on the traumatic true event, a girl is kidnapped and tortured by the children in her neighbourhood. It takes the meaning of “do you really know who you’re living next door to” to the next level and is a truly scary read.

Psycho by Robert Bloch

The classic novel that has become iconic over the years, this book is actually based on the brutal history of Ed Gein, the prolific serial killer. If you read this book and were shocked anyone could come up with such a gruesome story – well it’s based on events that actually happened – just to make it even worse for you!

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

If you’re a true crime fan then the name H. H. Holmes will fill you with dread and disgust, if not then you’re in for a wild ride. This book focuses on Holmes and his architect friend as they attend Chicago’s Worlf Fair, but be careful…there may be something in the walls…

Audrey Rose by Frank De Felitta

One of the first books to tell the story of the author, this books is Frank explaining the crazy situation that he witnessed, and the reincarnation of Audrey Rose. Make sure to keep the lights on…

The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty

There is barely a person who hasn’t heard of The Exorcist and doesn’t know the whole “head turning” floating in the air scene? Yep it’s all here, and terrifyingly based on true events…as if the world wasn’t scary enough!

I hope you liked this post – what are your thoughts of the books I talked about? Have you read any of them? Leave a comment below, or with some recommendations!

Until next time,

  1. Oh lord, Amityville !!
I watched a few minutes (not sure how long, but not all of it for sure…) of one of the films and I made my friend laugh at me as I had a bowl of popcorn and it flunged in the air 🙈 and I refused to take baths for a few years ..
im more thriller than horrors, but that must be so different in books! A nice list of recommendation, thank you!
