Synopsis: ‘Buy my stepfather’s ghost’ read the e-mail. So Jude did. He bought it, in the shape of the dead man’s suit, delivered in a heart-shaped box, because he wanted it: because his fans ate up that kind of story. It was perfect for his collection: the genuine skulls and the bones, the real honest-to-God snuff movie, the occult books and all the rest of the paraphanalia that goes along with his kind of hard/goth rock.
But the rest of his collection doesn’t make the house feel cold. The bones don’t make the dogs bark; the movie doesn’t make Jude feel as if he’s being watched. And none of the artefacts bring a vengeful old ghost with black scribbles over his eyes out of the shadows to chase Jude out of his home, and make him run for his life . . .
If you thought online shopping was a fun hobby, then after reading this book you’ll definitely be thinking twice!
This is definitely one of the best horror books I’ve ever read. It had such a perfect balance of suspense, horror and a story to keep you on the edge of your seat. The main character had such a great personality, and a wonderful balance of sarcasm, and belief in the paranormal so I felt like it worked perfectly.
I loved how the narrative was not only filled with suspense, but it also had such a deep story to it, and really made you think. It’s rare that horror books can make you do that but this did it so well.
The ending was outstanding, and I couldn’t put it down. Each character had so much depth to them, and the relationship between them was written beautifully.
This book has so many unique aspects that can’t be found in other books, and is true testament to the pure talent of Joe Hill. From a story that will leave you scared of what you see out of the corner of your eye, to characters with such depth it will leave you in tears. If you’re looking for a horror – this is the one to read.
