Title: The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

Rating: ★★★★★

Release: 14th February 2017

Synopsis: Fallon is the daughter of a proud Celtic king and the younger sister of the legendary fighter Sorcha. When Fallon was just a child, Sorcha was killed by the armies of Julius Caesar.
On the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Fallon is excited to follow in her sister’s footsteps and earn her place in her father’s war band. She never gets the chance.
Fallon is captured and sold to an elite training school for female gladiators–owned by none other than Julius Caesar himself. In a cruel twist of fate, the man who destroyed Fallon’s family might be her only hope of survival.
Now, Fallon must overcome vicious rivalries, deadly fights in and out of the arena, and perhaps the most dangerous threat of all: her irresistible feelings for Cai, a young Roman soldier and her sworn enemy.

An action packed novel with everything a historical fiction book needs, from badass female protagonists to Roman soldiers! You’ll be thinking of this long after the final page.

I’d heard amazing things about this book before I picked it up, so I was already really excited to read it. However once I actually got around to it, I completely fell in love with it!

The story kicks in straight away, which I loved. It can be hard when you read a book with a slow start, but this was everything I wanted. I was hooked from the first page, and the story just kept getting better and better. The narrative in itself was brilliantly created, with such historical meaning behind it. I loved how we could see a clear divide between the Romans and the British, it made it feel so real.

Fallon slowly became one of the best female protagonists I’ve ever read about. I loved how she never gave up, and that her honour was the most important part of her life. She was so inspiring, and the journey of her having to learn to be a warrior was written beautifully. I felt like I was on the journey with her, and I felt everything she did.

The characters all worked together so well and I love the comradeship between Fallon and her friends. However it was also brilliant how Fallon still kept her need to be a warrior above all, it showed just how much of a strong character she is.

This book has everything you could want in a historical fiction novel; Romans, historical accuracy, badass females! It is exciting and dramatic from start to finish, and you’ll want the next book as soon as you finish!
