Release: 25th September 2014
The start of this book hits you with such heartbreak that you can’t help but read on in hopes that you’ll find some light at the end of the tunnel.
The book truly captivates you in the best way, with dramatic situations and death all occurring within the first few chapters. This book has a way of making you fall in love with something and then taking it straight away from you, but that’s one of the most wonderful things about it, that it’s written so well it has that power.
I was completely gripped by this book, and every time I put it down all I wanted to do was pick up right where I left off straight away. It was definitely the reason behind a few sleepless nights! There are so many characters mentioned within the story that I was wary it might get confusing or that characters may be left out, yet this was never the case. It was in fact one of the rarest books in the YA genre as each character played an important part in the overall narrative, and each character even had their own back story and reasoning behind everything they did. This was one of the major reasons why I love this book, no character is unimportant and just like in everyday life, every action you take has a consequence.
Darrow’s character was also extremely standout within the book. From the first page until the last, he has so much honour for his people and love for his family that I couldn’t help but fall in love with his character. Not only was it a brilliant breath of fresh air to have a male YA protagonist, but to have him so loyal to his people was inspiring. Pierce Brown unknowingly created one of the most honourable characters and I am awe inspired by him.
The book had the possibility to add onto the list of every other YA dystopian that has been released, but it is so much more. It takes that genre and takes it to a different level making it unique and brand new. The war to get to Primus, the character development and the twists and turns were spectacular.
I can’t wait to get round to reading the rest of the series!
Red Rising, and the rest of the trilogy are out now at all major bookstores and online outlets!
