Warlock Holmes: A Study in Brimstone by G.S. Denning // Review

Title: Warlock Holmes: A Study in Brimstone by G.S. Denning

Rating: ★★★★★

Release: 27th May 2016

This brilliant novel is a beautifully created homage to the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, but with one of the best twists in any retelling.

Warlock Holmes: A Study in Brimstone tells the story of Warlock Holmes. Yes you heard right, Warlock Holmes. Warlock is not like Sherlock Holmes however, he’s a useless detective, and not the best warlock in the world either. Luckily enough he has the terrified but brilliant Dr. John Watson by his side to help him deduce and in turn solve the many crimes in London. Oh, and don’t forget the ogre and vampire detectives Grogsson and Lestrade, they’re in for the ride as well!

This book was one of the best adaptations of the original Sherlock Holmes books that I’ve ever read. I loved how it was John who was the ‘genius’ compared to the other stories, it was such a refreshing point of view, and it led to a lot of hilarious moments!

It was so interesting how the ‘main’ villains of the original Sherlock stories, Moriarty and Magnussen are still present in the book, not in the way that’s expected but it’s such a surprise and brilliant twist!

There were also some little nods to the original stories, and each case was linked with a reference to the Conan Doyle cases making it such an exciting book to read, and nostalgic to when I first fell in love with the character of Sherlock Holmes!

One of my favourite parts of the book though, was how the book was split into different ‘cases’ written by John, rather than chapters! It contained such a unique aspect to the book, and really helped to immerse you in the entire story, since the cases they go on are so important!

This book was the perfect balance of the original stories, and a new twist on the story, to create a wonderful and fun reading experience! I loved all of the characters, the development of the story, and the character swap between John and Warlock! It was the best start to 2017 – I can’t wait for the sequel!
